Su's background is in Nursing (she was Senior Nursing Sister of a regional children's Burns Unit) and medical and healthcare research (she was Joint Head of the Clinical Trials Research Unit, The University of Leeds, 1998 to 2002).
She has published approximately 50 research papers, including first author papers in the Lancet and BMJ. Grants obtained include from the European Union, NHS HTA and MRC. She has acted as a reviewer for grants, journals, and books. Her membership of boards and professional bodies include 14 national and 4 regional.
In 2004 Su founded the local charity 'The Positive Care Programme' in Leeds, West Yorkshire, for people with long-term illness and carers and ran this until 2011.
