It is well documented that yoga offers effective support in the symptoms of anxiety and depression. Practice can help complete and release unresolved stress responses in the body, ease associated muscular tensions and holding patterns and establish breathing techniques which are highly effective tools for managing strong emotions and feelings. Research demonstrates that yoga can consciously 'shift' the nervous system, enhancing vagal efficiency, concentrating focus and providing greater agency over the body’s arising sensations.
A well-known study from Boston University reveals a significant increase in GABA levels after just one hour of practice. Numerous other studies reveal elevated post-practice levels of beneficial biochemicals including endocannabinoids, serotonin, and nitric oxide.
