Professor Robert Newton AM, PhD, DSc, is Professor of Exercise Medicine and founder of the Exercise Medicine Research Institute at Edith Cowan University, established in 2004. His research focuses on exercise as neoadjuvant, adjuvant, and rehabilitative cancer therapy to reduce treatment side-effects, enhance the effectiveness of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and improve survival, strength, body composition, functional capacity, and quality of life. An Accredited Exercise Physiologist with over 40 years’ clinical experience, he is a Fellow of multiple international professional bodies. He was named Western Australian Premier’s Scientist of the Year (2019) and appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (2026) for services to exercise medicine and cancer research. Professor Newton has supervised more than 80 PhD and Masters students, published over 1,000 scientific works (h-index 103; >37,000 citations), and secured 161 competitive grants exceeding $51 million from major national and international funding agencies.
