Patrick McKeown is a world leader in breathing training, specializing in personalized exercises for both children and adults. Educated at Trinity College Dublin, he completed his clinical training in Russia under the personal accreditation of the late Dr Konstantin Buteyko in 2002. With 23 years of clinical experience, Patrick has worked with clients ranging from children to adults, primarily using tailored breathing exercises to target a wide range of health complaints and enhance functional health and performance.

He has trained over 13,000 healthcare professionals including medical doctors, dentists, physiotherapists, and psychotherapists across more than fifty countries. Patrick is the creator of MyoTape, a safe tape worn surrounding the mouth during sleep to help ensure nasal breathing, supporting sleep quality and respiratory health for adults and children.

He has also tailored the application of breathing exercises to sleep disorders including obstructive sleep apnea, as presented in his scientific review publication (McKeown, P, O’Connor-Reina C, Plaza G. Breathing Re-Education and Phenotypes of Sleep Apnea: A Review. J Clin Med. 2021;10(3):471).

Patrick developed Psychophysiological Breath Training (PBT), a structured and evidence-based approach for mental health practitioners to integrate breathing interventions for anxiety, panic disorder, and depression. The Cert PBT course equips clinicians with the skills to assess, individualize, and deliver breathwork as part of mental health treatment. His methodology centers on assessing everyday breathing patterns and correcting dysfunctional breathing, which affects up to 75 percent of people with anxiety, to alleviate symptoms, break the cycle of stress, and support overall well-being. Without proper assessment and tailored intervention, dysfunctional breathing can perpetuate symptoms and fuel stress and anxiety responses.

Patrick’s latest books include The Breathing Cure, Breathing for Yoga, and The Breathing Cure for Sleep. His training programs and educational resources are available at buteykoclinic.com.
