Dr James Kustow

Consultant Adult Psychiatrist and Adult ADHD Specialist; Medical Director at The Grove Practice; Author of ‘How to Thrive with adult ADHD – 7 Pillars for focus, productivity and balance’.

Dr James Kustow is a London-based Consultant Psychiatrist (and integrative psychotherapist), working in a specialist NHS adult ADHD service as well as his busy private practice. He is also the Medical Director of The Grove Practice, an internationally respected mental health training provider, and he runs The Grove’s ADHD+ programme for professionals, and its THRIVE programme for anyone who has, or suspects they have, ADHD.

Dr Kustow is a member of UKAAN's Executive board (UKAAN is the main professional organisation for Adult ADHD in the UK). He is UKAAN’s Director of Education and was instrumental in the development of the national training programme for psychiatrists.

He is the author of a new bestselling book on adult ADHD, ‘How to Thrive with adult ADHD – 7 Pillars for focus, productivity and balance’, published by Penguin in October 2024.

He is a recognised national and international speaker on adult ADHD, and the winner of the ‘Genius Award’ at the 2021 Celebrating Neurodiversity Awards (run by the social enterprise group, Genius Within) for the ground-breaking ‘Lifeskills’ adult ADHD group programme he established in the NHS about 5 years ago.

Over recent years Dr Kustow has developed a particular interest in the overlap between ADHD and hypermobility (and related disorders) and has spoken on this association at various international meetings. He believes this characteristic cluster of syndromes may provide vital clues to understanding the physiological underpinnings of ADHD and other neuropsychiatric presentations.

Dr Kustow has co-authored a number of influential papers, including the recently published Adult ADHD Assessment Quality Assurance Standard (AQAS) by UKAAN. He also chaired a team of European experts in the 2018 update of the pharmacotherapy section of the European Consensus Statement on Diagnosis and Treatment of Adult ADHD.

Separate from his interest in adult ADHD, he is the founder of the award winning ‘Marrow’ programme (linked to the Anthony Nolan charity), a network of university groups across the country, which provides a third of the UK’s stem cell register.
