Dr Carsten Nicolaus
Dr Carsten Nicolaus is a world-renowned infectious diseases expert, who has dedicated his career to the research, diagnosis, and treatment of Lyme (Borrelia) and other tick-borne diseases. This includes the many associated health conditions and illnesses that are associated with Lyme including more recently, long-Covid. Since 1990, he has advised over 25,000 patients from more than 80 countries and trained over 1,500 doctors.
He obtained his medical license in 1988 specializing in organ transplant followed by a doctorate in immunology in Munich. In 1990, he set up a GP practice in Augsburg, Germany, unaware it was in a Lyme-endemic area. He soon recognised many patients had chronic Lyme and pursued specialist training to improve diagnosis and treatment. Over the course of his career he developed unique treatment plans adopted by leading doctors and clinics worldwide.
In 2006, he founded the BCA-clinic, Europe's first Lyme clinic. His approach combined frontline clinical care, pioneering research, and a field-based training academy. The BCA-clinic, BCA-lab, and Training Centre gained global recognition until their closure in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2016, he co-founded Infectolab Americas (USA) to advance high-quality diagnostic testing for Lyme and other tick-borne diseases. In 2021, it established a research department to refine and advance its diagnostics.
Dr Nicolaus has been an active ILADS (International Lyme & Associated Diseases Society) member since 2007, serving both as a board director and treasurer. He is also a long-standing member of ILADEF (International Lyme and Associated Diseases Education Foundation) and sits on the medical advisory panel of the Charles E. Holman Morgellons Disease Foundation.
Dividing his time between the UK, Germany, and North America, he speaks at conferences and trains medical practitioners in diagnostics and treatment protocols. His ongoing research aims to improve global understanding of infectious and vector borne diseases. He continues to mentor doctors and clinics worldwide, offering support in managing complex medical cases.
While progress has been made in recognizing the impact of tick-borne diseases, more must be done. Dr Nicolaus advocates for a global ‘gold standard’ in diagnostics and treatment protocols to help doctors and patients achieve positive health outcomes.
