Over the last decade, the clinical interest and research base exploring the concept of the “exceptional cancer survivor” has grown exponentially. This is a potentially paradigm changing area of research which concerns itself with the clinical investigation of individuals living with medically incurable cancers who go on to survive for many years in good health and in many cases experience full remission. The rationale underpinning this area of clinical research is that if it is possible to find consistencies in the practices that the majority of exceptional cancer patients adopt into their lives, it would be highly likely that these practices are predictive in accounting for what allowed them to become exceptional. The identification of such practices therefore has immense value in supporting all those subsequently diagnosed with cancer in their quest for long term health and survival. Such consistencies have now been found to exist and the majority of the practices adopted by these exceptional cancer survivors fall under the framework of Ayurveda, a person-centered system of medicine that originated in India over 5000 years ago. During this talk, Dr Sam Watts will explore the clinical and evidential synergy between the Western and Ayurvedic understanding of exceptional cancer survival, the mechanisms that are predictive of this state and how Ayurveda can provide a unified framework for the adoption of these mechanisms. At the same time, he will explore the practical application of this model via direct reference to a clinical case study of a patient with medically incurable stage four esophageal cancer who has gone on to experience full remission through the adoption of integrative Ayurveda alongside the full battery of conventional medical treatments.
