Chronic low-grade metabolic acidosis is an important risk factor for various diseases; however, this knowledge has not been translated into treatment options in modern clinical practice. High dietary acid load is connected to increased risk for osteoporosis and diabetes and contributes to chronic pain problems. There is also evidence of a connection between acidosis and cognitive functions. Main provider of alkalines in our diet are vegetables and fruits but are not ingested in sufficient amounts. Alkaline supplements are an effective tool for reducing dietary acid load and can be used in various clinical settings.
